As the new chair of the Signal Processing Education Technical Committee (SPE TC), I’m looking forward to a dynamic year of outreach. The SPE TC is pleased to welcome three new members this year, Rich Baraniuk, Lina Karam, and Gail Rosen. Rich Baraniuk has been heavily involved with the TC’s effort to partner with Connexions, which provides SPS members and the general public with free access of educational material in a variety of areas including signal processing. The TC’s on-going partnership with Connexions is expected to be of great interest to a board audience. Lina Karam is General Co-chair of the 2011 IEEE DSP/SPE Workshop to be held in Sedona, Arizona, and Gail Rosen is SPE Technical Program Co-chair. Plans for the 2011 Workshop are moving forward, and the preliminary call for papers is available at this website. The paper submission deadline is 10 August 2010, so please mark your calendar. We sincerely invite you to share your latest educational innovations at the workshop!

IEEE issued its 2010 Call for Proposals for the Real-World Engineering Projects (RWEP). The goal of the RWEP program is to provide university educators of electrical engineering (EE), computer engineering (CE), computer science (CS), biomedical engineering (BE) and electrical engineering technology (EET) world-wide with a library of high-quality, tested, hands-on team-based society-focused projects for first-year students. These projects are designed to increase the recruitment, persistence to degree, and satisfaction of all students, and particularly women, in baccalaureate EE, CE, CS, BE and EET degree programs.

Now in its fourth successful year, the IEEE RWEP program continues to seek high quality, hands-on, team-based projects that focus on real-world problems whose solutions benefit society. The projects are expected to make the related IEEE fields of interest more relevant to first-year students, and to illustrate how the work of engineers and computer scientists directly impacts society.

Completed projects will be disseminated by IEEE for use by faculty in the development of first-year courses. Projects should be stand-alone modules requiring a combined 10 to 30 hours of lecture and laboratory instruction, and should be easily replicated at institutions worldwide with reasonable cost and effort. Authors of completed projects will receive a $10,000 award from IEEE. Submissions are open to all faculty members who teach Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering Technology at a university that grants degrees in EE, CE, CS, BE and/or EET programs. Initial abstracts are due by 31 March, 2010. Complete details regarding the call for proposals are available online and inquiries can be made by email.

The Signal Processing for Communications and Networking Technical Committee (SPCOM TC) aims at illuminating and exploring signal processing challenges in communications and networking, and can be situated at the intersection of the IEEE Signal Processing (SPS), Communications (COMSOC), and Information Theory (IT) Societies.

The SPCOM TC is pleased to welcome three new members: Huaiyu Dai from the North Carolina State University, USA, Amir Leshem from the Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and Zhi Tian from the Michigan Technological University, USA. In addition, the membership of the following members has been renewed: Tim Davidson, Daniel Palomar, Mats Bengtsson, Akbar Sayeed, Hamid Sadjadpour, and Zhengdao Wang. The members that are stepping down are Franz Hlawatsch, Anna Scaglione, and Zhengyuan (Daniel) Xu. We would like to thank them for their valuable contributions.

The SPCOM TC and the SAM TC joined forces in organizing two joint sessions at ICASSP 2010: SPCOM-L2 Distributed Estimation in Sensor Networks and SAM-P6 Sensor Networks I: localization and Cooperative Communication. See the ICASSP10 technical program for more detailed information.

The flagship conference of the SPCOM TC is the IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC). This year’s SPAWC10 will be held June 20-23, 2010, in Marrakech, Morocco, chaired by Mounir Ghogho from the University of Leeds of UK and Ananthram Swami from the U.S. Army Research Lab. Plenary talks will be given by Gerhard Fettweis, Georgios B. Giannakis, Andrea Goldsmith, Nikos Sidiropoulos, and Qing Zhao.

By Jessica Fridrich, Cambridge University Press, Dec. 2009.

Description from the publisher: Steganography, the art of hiding of information in apparently innocuous objects or images, is a field with a rich heritage, and an area of rapid current development. This clear, self-contained guide shows you how to understand the building blocks of covert communication in digital media files and how to apply the techniques in practice, including those of steganalysis, the detection of steganography. Assuming only a basic knowledge in calculus and statistics, the book blends the various strands of steganography, including information theory, coding, signal estimation and detection, and statistical signal processing. Experiments on real media files demonstrate the performance of the techniques in real life, and most techniques are supplied with pseudo-code, making it easy to implement the algorithms. The book is ideal for students taking courses on steganography and information hiding, and is also a useful reference for engineers and practitioners working in media security and information assurance.

Please visit the book’s website for table of contents and more information.

The Steering Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) invites proposals to host the 2011 and 2012 conference editions. With typically around 1000 submissions and 500 participants each year, ICME has been the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies since 2000. It serves as a forum to promote the exchange of the latest advances in multimedia technologies, systems, and applications from both the research and development perspectives of the circuits and systems, communications, computer, and signal processing communities. Please visit ICME web site for an overview of ICME, recent major format changes, and history of prior conferences.

Proposals are open to all regions. A letter of intent should be submitted electronically to the ICME Steering Committee Chair, Prof. Wenjun Zeng, at zengw@missouri.edu by March 15, 2010. Full proposals should be submitted electronically by May 15, 2010 for 2011 proposals and July 1, 2010 for 2012 proposals. A strong (internationally renowned) and highly motivated organizing committee is expected. Proponents are strongly encouraged to present their proposals at the next ICME Steering Committee meeting to be held during ICME 2010 in Singapore. Visit here for further details on the submission requirements and schedule.
