Initiatives & Trends

Virtual and augmented (VR/AR) systems have recently become exceedingly popular by enabling new immersive digital experiences. The application areas of VR/AR are not only limited to gaming and entertainment, but also education and training, environmental and weather sciences, disaster relief, and healthcare.

Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) hold tremendous potential to advance our society and are commonly seen as the 4th major disruptive technology wave after PC, the Internet/Web, and mobile.

For our January 2019 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of face recognition. In one embodiment no. 10,162,999, a method includes accessing an image file associated with a first user of a communication system and detecting a face in an image corresponding to the image file.

In patent no. 9,477,869 a mutual-capacitance palm print identification method is provided, a mutual-capacitance palm print identification device and a mutual-capacitance palm print identification touch panel.

In patent no. 10,055,660 a system, a non-transitory computer readable medium, and a method for Arabic handwriting recognition are provided. The method includes acquiring an input image representative of a handwritten Arabic text from a user, partitioning the input image into a plurality of regions, determining a bag of features representation...

Can you find ships on satellite images as quickly as possible? Airbus just announced a Kaggle competition to challenge researchers to build a model that detects all ships in satellite images. The goal is to increase the accuracy and speed of automatic ship detection.

For our September 2018 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), both from algorithm and hardware development sides.

For our August 2018 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of Lidar based scene analysis. Patent no. 10,031,231 presents an object-detection system suitable for an automated vehicle which includes a lidar and a controller. The lidar is used to detect a point-cloud that is organized into a plurality of scan-lines.

OpenAI recently announced their latest bot, OpenAI Five, which was able to beat amateur human teams in 5v5 Dota 2 games. This happended in less than a year since last August, when OpenAI bot defeated the world’s best Dota 2 player in a 1v1 game.

Patent no. 9,934,430 presents methods, systems, and computer-readable media related to a technique for providing handwriting input functionality on a user device. A handwriting recognition module is trained to have a repertoire comprising multiple non-overlapping scripts and capable of recognizing tens of thousands of characters using a single handwriting recognition model.
