A recent article by MIT Technology Review describes how artificial intelligence is changing a workforce in many companies today. In particular, they present the case of General Electric and its workforce. This interesting piece can be found at https://www.technologyreview.com/s/607962/general-electric-builds-an-ai-workforce/  and it is worth reading especially for all of us in the signal processing community. It will be interesting to see how artificial intelligence will shape our community.

How can real-time analysis of wireless communications data improve weather forecasts? Read more.

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, have developed a new navigation system that is based entirely on existing terrestrial signals, such as cellular and Wi-Fi, rather than GPS. The new technology, which the researchers claim is both highly reliable and accurate, can function as a standalone alternative to GPS or as an alternative to satellite signals to enable highly reliable, consistent, and tamper-proof navigation in autonomous systems, such as robots, driverless terrestrial vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Google has launched a new artificial intelligence experiment named AutoDraw. It uses the same technology used in QuickDraw, to guess what you are trying to draw by matching your doodles with a database of professional drawings. Please visit https://www.autodraw.com to start creating.

For our May 2017 issue, we cover recent patents dealing with signal processing applications of neural networks. Patent no 9,627,532 presents methods and apparatus for training a multi-layer artificial neural network for use in speech recognition.

Read about the IEEE Video and Image Processing (VIP) Cup which has the goal of implementing traffic sign detection algorithms that can robustly perform under challenging environmental conditions.

For our April 2017 issue, we cover recent patents dealing with image fusion, including new general image fusion methods, and specific applications such as image stabilization, and medical image analysis.

NASA has released its 2017-2018 software catalog, covering a wide range of areas including propulsion, health and medicine, crew and life support, data and image processing, environmental science, and aeronautics. It is free to download for anyone. Please visit https://software.nasa.gov/ to access the full software catalog.

The US National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) is pleased to announce the launch of the PerfLoc Prize Competition on March 22, 2017. This competition is about developing the best possible indoor localization and tracking app for Android smartphones. The competition participants are required to use the extensive Android smartphone data repository developed by NIST to develop their apps and have their apps’ performance evaluated through the PerfLoc Performance Evaluation Portal. The website for the PerfLoc Prize Competition is at

Remotely controlled ships, piloted by people on shore, and autonomous ships, which can take actions for themselves, are the latest beneficiaries of increasing digital connectivity and intelligence. This IEEE Spectrum articles provides an insider's perspective on autonomous ships in high seas, covering sensing, communication, collision avoidence, compelx maneuvers and more.
