Initiatives & Trends

Since 2006, deep learning—a new area of machine learning research—has emerged impacting a wide range of signal and information processing work.

For over a decade, there has been an increasing interest in face recognition in diverse fields such as pattern recognition, computer vision, telecommunications, video, security and Internet applications, and cognitive psychology.

By most standards, cloud computing is still in the early stages of adoption by midsize and larger organizations, but the pace is increasing as users look for additional cost savings and technology perks, such as scalability.

At a minimum, it appears that most midsize and large organizations are making some kind of investment in cloud computing, or in shared services at some level, that would eventually lead to their accessing programs, storage, and processing from service providers on virtualized or distributed systems.

Data rates offered by mobile networks are increasing, as are the capabilities of mobile devices. With this, mobile multimedia services are getting wider distribution.

Literally millions of video surveillance cameras tracking our every move just about everywhere in the world.

University of Utah computer scientists developed software that quickly edits "extreme resolution imagery" — huge photographs containing billions to hundreds of billions of pixels or dot-like picture elements.

Until now, it took hours to process these "gigapixel" images. The new software needs only seconds to produce preview images useful to doctors, intelligence analysts, photographers, artists, engineers and others.
