Jose M.F. Moura, SPS Vice President-Awards and Membership and
Sadaoki Furui, Chair, SPS Fellow Reference Committee

IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the IEEE. It honors members with an outstanding record of technical achievements, contributing importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, and bringing significant value to society.

The Executive Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) appointed two new Chairs who will start their terms on 1 January 2017: H.Vincent Poor and Isabel Trancoso.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society was recently awarded the IEEE Educational Activities Board Society/Council Professional Development Award! The award citation states, “for innovative educational and professional development programs that engage professionals, students and the general public in signal processing,” will be presented during the IEEE Meeting Series in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA later this month. SPS President Rabab Ward will accept the award on behalf of the Society.

The Fellow Reference Committee is seeking nominations for five new members of the 2017 Fellow Reference Committee. The term of appointment is three years, non-renewable (1 January 2017-31 December 2019). The position is responsible for evaluating nominations for IEEE Fellow that are referred for review by the IEEE Fellow Committee. Candidates must hold the grade of IEEE Fellow and must be an SPS Member.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 18 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow. The new Senior Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society are:

Your vote is important! On 15 August 2016, the election of Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 1-6 and Region 8 (term 1 January 2017 through 31 December 2018) and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2017 through 31 December 2019) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors will open.

This year, the Society will be filling TWO positions on the N&A Committee and TWO positions on the Awards Board. Nominations must be received no later than Friday, 30 September 2016.

IEEE Day 2016 is going to be held on Tuesday, 4 October.

This will be the seventh anniversary of IEEE members celebrating the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.

Since the first IEEE Day event in 2010, the number of events worldwide has grown over 600% from 80 to over 600. The IEEE Day team needs you to help grow this annual event even larger.

You may have received an email from Howard E. Michel, IEEE 2015 President and CEO, instructing you to vote FOR the IEEE Constitutional Amendment on this year’s member ballot. As you know, the Board of Governors of our Signal Processing Society has unanimously voted against the amendment. Actually, the governing bodies of the majority of IEEE societies are against it, including the largest ones such as Computer, Communications, and Power and Engineering.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 8 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest.
