Society News

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) invites nominations for the positions of: Chapters Committee Chair, Education Committee Chair and Seasonal Schools Subcommittee Chair. The term for all the positions is three years (1 January 2016-31 December 2018).

Jose' M. F. Moura, SPS Awards Board Chair

SPS has changed its nominating process for all Society Awards from paper awards to the major society awards. We now call for nominations from any society individual member, society committee, or society board. Nominations from individual members can be supported by up to two endorsement letters from two other individual members. Full details on the nomination process are available on the Society website.

The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) elected two new officers who will start their terms on 1 January 2016: Ali H. Sayed (University of California) will serve as 2016-2017 SPS President-Elect and Walter Kellermann (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) will serve as 2016-2018 SPS Vice President-Technical Directions.

The IEEE Signal Processing Cup (SP Cup) is a competition that provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to form teams and work together to solve a challenging and interesting real-world problem using signal-processing techniques and methods. Three teams are selected to present their work, and prizes will be awarded at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP).

As part of the January 2015 Board Retreat, IEEE President and CEO Howard Michel convened a diverse group of participants including the IEEE Board of Directors, the executive staff team, and select volunteers to engage in a candid and productive dialogue around IEEE’s future direction and strategy. A three-day retreat resulted in 12 strategic topics, each with recommendations and perceived importance of the recommendations.

The IEEE Awards Board invites you to nominate candidates for the 2016 IEEE W.R.G. Baker Prize Paper Award and the IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award.

Nominations are due 1 July 2015 for the 2016 IEEE Medals and Recognitions.

IEEE Medals are the highest recognition within the IEEE awards hierarchy, with the prestigious IEEE Medal of Honor as the premier award. IEEE Medals embrace broad and significant contributions within the technical fields of interest of IEEE.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 169 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society invites nominations for the 2016 Class of SPS Distinguished Lecturers (DLs). Per the Board of Governors’ motion, this year the Society will also appoint a special Distinguished Lecturer in the area of Machine Learning/Data Science for a two-year term. The special Distinguished Lecturer will be available for a period of four years, so we will appoint a sixth Distinguished Lecturer in 2015 and in 2017, explicitly in the area of Machine Learning/Data Science.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is happy to announce the addition of fifteen new Chapters formed in 2019. We welcome the new SPS Chapters and wish them great success in their future activities and events.
