Welcome to the May 2007 issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Speech and Language Technical Committee (SLTC) e-Newsletter.

Many of us recently returned from a wonderful ICASSP conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. There were many interesting tutorials, plenary talks, and lecture and poster sessions at the conference. Of course, the tropical weather didn't hurt either!  Speech and Language research was well-represented with almost 700 papers in Speech and Spoken Language Processing. Professor Sadaoki Furui delivered a plenary talk on 50 years of progress in speech recognition technology, and challenges for the future. For those that were unable to attend the conference, we are very pleased to be able to share the presentation slides from Professor Furui's plenary talk with you here in our newsletter.
