This issue features the next installment of our regular column, "Getting to Know Your Fellow Researchers", highlighting Julia Hirschberg, who is a Professor at Columbia University in New York City, USA. She has contributed immensely to the IEEE society and the larger SLTC community for a number of years now.
The SLTC is seeking nomination for new members for a 3-year term (2018-2020). The responsibilities and the nomination process are spelled out in an article by the election sub-committee.
We would like to draw your attention to the first joint call for workshop proposals on behalf of ACL, COLING, NAACL and EMNLP, to be hosted in 2018.
The 2018 Jelinek Summer Workshop on Speech and Language Technology will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University. The organization is underway and the call for proposal was posted on the IEEE SLTC website last month (and included in this issue).
This newsletter is an ideal forum for updates, reports, announcements and editorials which don't fit well with traditional journals. We welcome your contributions, as well as calls for papers, job announcements, comments and suggestions.
