From Research to Reality: Industry Innovations at CISym 2027
February 22-24, 2027 | Burlingame, CA, USA
The Computational Imaging Symposium traces its roots to the Computational Imaging (COIMG) track at IS&T Electronic Imaging, which started in 2003. Over nearly 25 years the track grew into one of the most active venues for research at the intersection of optics, signal processing, machine learning, and imaging systems. In 2027, COIMG becomes an independent symposium — the Computational Imaging Symposium (CISym) — with its own program, organizing structure, and identity. The move reflects both the growth of the field and a desire to create a more focused, community-owned venue.
CISym exists to bring together researchers working across the full pipeline of computational imaging: from physics and optics through algorithm design, learning-based methods, and application domains. We value work that bridges theory and practice, and we welcome both mature results and early-stage ideas.
The symposium is organized primarily around talks rather than papers, using a format similar to SIAM conferences. Presenters need only submit a short abstract, so researchers from industry can share their work without writing a formal paper. However, those who want an archival publication may submit an optional 5+1 page paper for publication in IEEE Xplore. Special sessions — themed groups of talks organized by community members — sit alongside open abstract submissions, creating a program shaped by the community itself. The schedule includes morning and afternoon sessions, audience-interactive panel discussions, and social events, plus time for discussion and informal exchange. A poster session gives additional work an opportunity for in-depth conversation.
The symposium will take place in Burlingame, CA, USA, from February 22 through 24, 2027, with Crowne Plaza San Francisco Airport serving as the conference venue.
CISym is built for people who want more effective ways to get research and development done. In coding workshops and panel discussions, participants share their ideas about effective strategies for using AI tools, and they have the opportunity to exchange open source CI software.
The technical program of CISym 2027 is organized around several core themes that reflect the evolving landscape of the following twelve fields: Inverse Problems & Reconstruction, AI/Deep Learning for Imaging, Scientific & Medical Imaging, Hyperspectral & Multispectral Imaging, Coherent & Non-coherent Optical Sensing, Sensor Hardware & Algorithm Co-design, X-ray Imaging & Tomography/Ptychography, Neutron & Nontraditional Imaging, Acoustic & Ultrasound Imaging, Computational Microscopy and Photography, Generative Diffusion & Bayesian Sampling, and Image Restoration & Enhancement. The conference will include talks organized into special sessions, poster sessions, coding workshops, panel discussions, and receptions.
CISym 2027 is led by Conference Chair, Charles A. Bouman, Purdue University, and supported by an international organizing committee overseeing the technical program, keynotes, publications, finance, and publicity. CISym 2027 is technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Additional information is available on the official conference website, https://computational-imaging.org/.
