The candidate should have an M.S or Ph.D. degree in EE, CS, Acoustics or related discipline and with expertise in algorithm development. The candidate should also have interest (or experience) in applying machine learning (e.g., Deep Learning) and getting to understand new frameworks such as TensorFlow or Caffe would be useful.  Key skills of the successful candidate include:

  • Broad knowledge of speech production and audio perception and processing
  • Excellent knowledge and strong working background and experience in acoustics, audio (spatial audio on speakers and headphones, HRTFs etc.) and psychoacoustics
  • Experience or strong understanding in designing echo cancellers, de-reverberation, and other voice communication algorithms 
  • Experience is designing low complexity speech and audio processing algorithms 
  • Experience in setting up and running experiments and performing measurements with hardware (mics, speakers, HATS, audio interfaces, etc.)
  • Critical listening skills
  • Ability to setup and conduct/coordinate objective and subjective listening tests
  • Strong SW development skills; prototyping skills in Matlab, C++, Python
  • Working knowledge of audio SW stacks in Windows and Android
  • Interest in applying machine learning to audio ; Implementation experience in Deep Learning is desirable
  • Knowledge of frameworks such as Caffe & Tensor Flow

The individual would need to be located in Palo Alto. He should also be willing to make domestic and international trips on occasion. HP Labs research scientists are expected to undertake research programs which will advance the state of the art and have a significant business impact for HP.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong publication record at refereed academic conferences and journals, while having the ability to formulate research problems from real-world application, develop solutions and create IP. Strong communication skills are required, to make persuasive presentations to engineering leaders, executives and represent HP at conferences. The ability to drive research results into products is highly valued.
