IEEE Section Chairs and Section Membership Development Chairs receive a monthly email notification regarding newly joined members in your Section. The current list of new members (those who joined in the past 30 days) is available through SAMIEEE, your volunteer analytics tool. The report provides member contact information: name, mailing address, email address, phone number, type of membership (traditional, e-membership), Societies joined, grade, and reasons for joining IEEE.
The IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) is currently soliciting proposals for one of its 2016 funding opportunities. The IEEE HAC is tasked with supporting the IEEE Board-endorsed vision of IEEE volunteers around the world carrying out and/or supporting impactful humanitarian activities at the local level. Learn why smart grids are key to modernizing the current electrical system to optimize the conservation and delivery of power with the new free course, “Smart Grids: Electricity for the Future,” starting on 29 June. Check out “Enterprise Architecture and Essentials of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF® 9.1),” starting 14 July, to discover how to improve IT infrastructure and business efficiency using architectural framework.
The IEEE Maker Project competition has launched and will run through 17 September 2016. This year, Thomas Coughlin, IEEE Senior member and Chair of the IEEE Public Visibility Committee, will serve as the host of this competition and will be featured in an ongoing video series that will highlight cool projects and events on the contest website. If you’ve been tinkering with a tech project that solves complex problems and has application in the real world, here’s your chance to showcase your work.
As a special benefit to IEEE members for the month of August, IEEE-USA E-Books will offer “Shaping an Engineering Career – Book 3 - Volume 1: Advancing to Management.” In his review of career management, author Siri Varadan presents a useful and imaginative insight into how young engineers can begin to address career aspirations. Using his own career as a metaphor, he explores how career advancement is a function of opportunity, meeting preparation and readiness. The e-book is available 1 August to 15 September.

The twenty ninth Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS), a single track machine learning and computational neuroscience conference, was held in Montreal, during a relatively balmy winter week, spanning December 7th to 12th. The conference saw a record number of attendees. As illustrated in the graph, during the last 14 years, there has been a steady increase in the number of attendees in all three categories -- tutorials, conference, and workshops; and biggest growth this year was in tutorials where the attendance doubled compared to the previous year!
