Future networks must provide services to a range of applications and devices with competing and perhaps conflicting requirements while simultaneously allowing flexible deployment. Software Defined Networks (SDN) have a critical role to play in securing such networks against sophisticated security attacks, with its ability to manage dynamically security policies for monitoring and controlling traffic and enforcing them via virtualized network functions.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to widespread morbidity and mortality. Several countries have been forced into prolonged lockdowns in a desperate attempt to control the pandemic by physical distancing. Such lockdowns have devastated livelihoods and put large numbers of people at grave risk of prolonged unemployment, poverty, and even starvation.

It is my pleasure to announce that the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) annual election will commence on 17 August! This year, all eligible SPS Members will now vote for the Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 1-6 and 8 (term 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2022), and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2023) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors (BoG).

The Computational Medicine Laboratory (CML) at the University of Houston is currently looking to recruit one highly motivated and creative Ph.D. student with applied mathematics, signal processing, and/or control theory background to develop mathematical algorithms for biomedical engineering applications with a focus on human subject research.

Translational utility is the ability of certain biomedical imaging features to capture useful subject-level characteristics in clinical settings, yielding sensible descriptions and/or predictions for individualized treatment trajectory. An important step in achieving translational utility is to demonstrate the association between imaging features and individual characteristics, such as sex, age, and other relevant assessments, on a large out-of-sample unaffected population (no diagnosed illnesses). This initial step then provides a strong normative basis for comparison with patient populations in clinical settings. Detailed information. Website.
