Abstract: Promoting sparsity in deep networks is a natural way to control their complexity, and it is a timely endeavor since practical neural model sizes have grown to unprecedented levels. The lessons from sparsity in linear inverse problems also bear the promise of many other benefits beyond such computational aspects, from statistical significance to explainability. Can these promises be fulfilled? Can we safely leverage the know-how of sparsity-promoting regularizers for inverse problems to harness sparsity in deeper contexts, linear or not?
Abstract: Continual learning refers to the problem of learning multiple tasks presented sequentially to the learner without forgetting previously learned tasks. Recently, many deep learning-based approaches have been proposed for continual learning; however, the mathematical foundations behind existing continual learning methods remain underdeveloped. On the other hand, adaptive filtering is a classic subject in signal processing with a rich history of mathematically principled methods. However, its role in understanding the foundations of continual learning has been underappreciated.
The Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee of each Technical Committee is currently accepting nominations for new Members, and, where applicable, the Vice Chair position. Nominations should be submitted directly to the respective Technical Committee’s Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee by 15 September 2026.
SPS is now soliciting nominations for distinguished lecturers/speakers to serve for two Society programs. Nominations must be received no later than 31 May 2026.

As the new chair of the Signal Processing Education Technical Committee (SPE TC), I'm looking forward to a dynamic year of outreach. The SPE TC is pleased to welcome three new members this year, Rich Baraniuk, Lina Karam, and Gail Rosen.
The IEEE Signal Processing Society organizes approximately twenty conferences, symposia and workshops each year. The Conference Board of the Society, chaired by SPS Vice President for Conferences, V. John Mathews, oversees all aspects of the conferences. The Board is currently engaged in an in-depth study of how to best enhance the quality, access and services for Society conferences.
