The rapid evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) has transformed text-based conversational interfaces, yet standard cascaded pipelines—relying on sequential Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), text LLM, and Text-to-Speech (TTS) modules—introduce significant latency, compounding error rates, and a complete loss of non-verbal acoustic nuances. This presentation introduces Speech Large Language Models (SpeechLLMs) to address these fundamental bottlenecks. The primary goal of this research paradigm is to construct native speech-to-speech models that bypass intermediate text conversions, enabling systems to directly process and generate raw speech waveforms while retaining essential acoustic, prosodic, and emotional informatics.

By unifying self-supervised audio representation learning, end-to-end sequence modeling, and joint acoustic-semantic tokenization, SpeechLLMs capture dynamic conversational properties such as timbre, speaker individuality, and emotional tracking. Real-world case studies demonstrate that these end-to-end architectures facilitate natural real-time turn-taking and cross-lingual voice interactions with substantially lower latency than traditional systems. Despite these advancements, key technical challenges remain, particularly surrounding model scalability, robustness against real-world acoustic noise, algorithmic bias, and the development of comprehensive evaluation benchmarks for generative multimodal audio.

Ultimately, SpeechLLMs represent a critical technical leap toward natural human-computer interaction, bridging signal processing, machine learning, and natural language understanding. For researchers and engineers across the speech and signal processing domains, native speech modeling opens up vital avenues for interdisciplinary progress in real-time assistive devices, cross-cultural communication, and accessible interfaces, shifting the paradigm from technology that merely processes text to systems that genuinely listen and respond in human voice.
