Consulting Area Editors – Role Description

The Consulting Area Editor (CAE) role is appropriate for early-career researchers who do not yet meet the seniority requirement (typically five years from PhD graduation) for the Associate Editor (AE) role. CAEs are typically expected to have (i) completed a PhD (or have comparable industry experience), (ii) prior experience as reviewers for the journal (or a similar journal or conference), and (iii) a strong publication record in their field. CAEs do not directly manage manuscripts or communicate directly with the authors; responsibilities include consulting on overview paper proposals, manuscript pre-screening and identifying reviewers, and providing occasional emergency reviews.

CAEs can also be invited to contribute to expanding the journal's social media presence. Their exact role is left at the discretion of the journal EiC. The CAE role is intended to prepare for a future position as Associate Editor (AE). Candidates for a CAE position must complete an application and be approved by the EiC. CAEs shall have a renewable term of three years.
