Assistant Professor

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon invites applications to four tenure-track faculty positions, starting September 2018. One faculty position is to be filled in each of the following areas: computer science, computer architecture, signal processing, and applied electromagnetics, preferably in the rank of Assistant Professor, although appointments in the rank of Associate Professor will be considered in the case of exceptional candidates. Applicants should possess a PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a closely-related field, and should have excellent academic credentials. Candidates will be expected to develop and teach graduate courses and maintain a strong research record in their respective areas. They are also expected to teach undergraduate courses relevant to their specialties.

Professor (W2) „Communication Acoustics“

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics are seeking to fill the
position of a Professor (W2) „Communication Acoustics“.

commencing as soon as possible within the cluster of excellence „Hearing4all“ (www.hearing4all.de).

The successful candidate should be a promising researcher with an excellent international publication record and
practical experience in several of the following areas:
• Numerical, technical and electro acoustics
• Psychological and audiological acoustics
• Modern methods in speech and audio processing
• Modelling of speech signals and human speech and audio perception

Candidates are expected, by combining the above-mentioned areas of expertise, to master extensive experimental lab-based
“subject-in-the-loop” methods in communication acoustics, which are at the centre of the envisaged Collaborative Research
Centre “Hearing Acoustics”.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the structured research programmes within the department, the
national centre of competence for hearing technology (HörTech), the Fraunhofer group “Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology”
and the graduate school OLTECH. In case of success in the ongoing grant application procedures, the successful candidate
should actively contribute to the envisaged Collaborative Research Centre “Hearing Acoustics” and the envisaged renewal
period of the cluster of excellence “Hearing4all”. In addition, she or he is expected to contribute to the core lecture programme
of the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics (lecturing in English is acceptable, but German language skills should be
acquired within three years) with emphasis on engineering physics and acoustics.

Preconditions for employment are specified in § 25 NHG. To increase the proportion of women in science, equally qualified

The position is suitable for part-time employment.

Seismic Processing R&D

The purpose of this function is to conduct research and development in the field of seismic data imaging. To design and implement processing solutions at an industrial scale and to contribute to the verification of their geophysical integrity. to provide unscheduled programming support and to contribute to software documentation and training.

Main Tasks

  • To carry out research and development activities in the field of seismic data imaging (noise attenuation, interpolation, spectral enhancement, deconvolution, …ect)

  • To contribute to the verification of geophysical integrity of the developed software

  • To contribute to software upgrades and bug fixes of existing technology developed in the project

  • To contribute to the generation of documentation for products including: nsd files, doc files, user requirements documents, design documents, testing plan documents, testing results documents, ‘best practice’ documents

  • To contribute to the preparation, quality control and the release of technical papers for publication and / or presentations

  • To contribute to training sessions and workshops as part of the release of new products developed

  • To follow the appropriate programming standards.

  • To carry out unscheduled programming support as required by PGS business units

  • Any other reasonable task requested by management

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Geophysics, Computer Science or other related technical field
  • Possess strong technical and applied knowledge in the field of signal processing, with applications to large volume dataset. focus is on one of the following topics:
  • time-frequency analysis, image processing and pattern recognition, monte-carlo methods, Convex optimization
  • Excellent programming skills  in Fortran, C/C++
  • Experience in working with real data is highly appreciated
  • Knowledge of geophysical problem is a plus
