News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

March 2016

The 2016 IEEE Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) Workshop is the 12th of a series of unique meetings that bring together researchers in academia and industry to share the most recent and exciting advances in image, video, and multidimensional signal processing and analysis. The main theme of the 2016 IVMSP Workshop is low-dimensional models for image and video processing and analysis. The scientific program of IVMSP 2016 will include plenary talks, invited sessions, as well as regular sessions with contributed research papers.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 42 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow. The new Senior Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society are:

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking an Assistant Director for the Master’s in Telecommunications (ENTS) program. This is a non-tenure-track full-time position with both academic and administrative responsibilities. The Assistant Director will teach ENTS courses, and advise ENTS students on academic matters.

Now IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form at the related TC section pages. To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and clicking on a particular TC. A link for the form can be found in the sidebar menu of the TC pages. Jobs can also be viewed from its individual TC pages or a combined listing that includes all TC jobs.

The Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee (IFS TC) reports on the 2016 Signal Processing Cup, the election of societal awards and the organization of the next WIFS'16 workshop.

Google is offering an online course on deep learning for free. The course is available through Udacity, a for-profit educational organization offering massive open online courses (MOOCs). It is estimated to take about three months to complete and assumes basic machine learning knowledge as prerequisite.

For our March 2016 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of time of flight technology development and applications, used for mobile device communication, tomography, 3D localization, dynamic range control and range imaging systems.

In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the membership will elect, by direct ballot, THREE Members-at-Large to the Board of Governors (BoG) for three-year terms commencing 1 January 2017 and ending 31 December 2019, as well as ONE Regional Director-at-Large each for the corresponding regions: Regions 1-6 (USA) and Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, Africa) for two-year terms commencing 1 January 2017 and ending 31 December 2018.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is accepting proposals from Regions 1-6 (USA) or 7 (Canada) for the 2017 IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP). SPS Members are invited to submit a proposal to host GlobalSIP. If you are interested in submitting a proposal please reference our guidelines for preparing and submitting a proposal: http://www.signalprocessingsociety.org/uploads/conferences/Globalsip_Proposal_Guidelines.pdf.
