The Fellow Reference Committee is seeking nominations for three new members of the 2015 Fellow Reference Committee. The term of appointment is three years, non-renewable (1 January 2015-31 December 2017). The position is responsible for evaluating nominations for IEEE Fellow that are referred for review by the IEEE Fellow Committee.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter of the Year Award will be presented for the fourth time in 2015. The award will be presented annually to a Chapter that has provided their membership with the highest quality of programs, activities and services. The award will be presented annually in conjunction with the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) to the Chapter’s representative. The award will consist of a certificate and a check in the amount of $1,000 to support local chapter activities. The winning Chapter will also be invited to publish an article in the IEEE Inside Signal Processing eNewsletter.

Ray Liu, SPS Nominations and Appointments Committee Chair In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I am writing to solicit nominations for the Awards Board for the term 2015-17 and the Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee for the term 2015-16. This year, the Society will be filling TWO positions on the N&A Committee and TWO positions on the Awards Board.

Bio-inspired systems can be traced back to the invention of radar systems. They are getting even more attention in recent years with topics such as the internet-of-things, intelligence and cognition becoming more and more relevant. Actually, people never stop the pave of learning from nature, animals and human beings. Acoustic signals used by dolphins are studied to develop sonar systems in marine applications[1]. Bats’ multi-frequency transmission systems afford us lessons to optimize the cognitive radar systems for echolocation, tracking and detection targets[2].

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2015 and will serve until 31 December 2017. Nine candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions. The successful candidates represent a broad spectrum of the Signal Processing Society. The Board of Governors will confirm the election results at their December Board meeting.

The American Epilepsy Society Seizure Prediction Challenge, hosted on Kaggle.com, started on August 25, 2014, and will end on November 17, 2014. It is the second phase of the Seizure Detection and Prediction Challenge designed by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Mayo Clinic. The first phase (ended on August 19, 2014), focusing on seizure detection, has attracted 200 teams, 241 players, and 4503 entries.
