News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

April 2010

The nomination period for the Regional Director-at-Large positions has been extended until FRIDAY, 23 APRIL 2010.  In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), the membership will elect, by direct ballot, ONE Regional Director-at-Large for the corresponding regions

IEEE Thematic Meetings in Signal Processing (THEMES) is a recent joint initiative by the Conference Board and Publication Board of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.  The inaugural THEMES event was held in March 2010 as a one-day event collocated with ICASSP 2010 in Dallas, Texas. The THEMES 2011 will be held on 22 May 2011 in Prague, Czech Republic, at the Prague Congress Centre. The Steering Committee for THEMES is inviting proposal for the THEMES 2011.

The IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (T-MM) solicits nominations for the Transactions Best Paper Award for 2010.  If you have read a paper which you feel is of exceptional merit, please consider nominating it for the award. The nominations period is open until 15 April 2010.  Any paper published in T-MM in 2007, 2008, or 2009 is eligible.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society appointed Alex Acero (Mircosoft Corporation) as Director-Industrial Relations and Shuvra S. Bhattacharyya (University of Maryland) as Director-Membership Services. Each Director’s appointment will run until 31 December 2012.

In November 2009, a Symposium on "Paths Ahead in the Science of Information and Decision Systems" was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The meeting was organized by the MIT's Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS)

, which has played and continues to play a major role in the development of this field.

The 35th IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) was held in Dallas, Texas on 14-19 March 2010. ICASSP is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) and is the premier venue for showcasing research in signal processing and related areas. This year’s conference was attended by about 2000 participants.

This year's ICASSP received 2855 submissions, including those invited for 10 special sessions on emerging signal processing topics of high interests to the community.

The Audio and Electroacoustics (AE) Technical Committee has a new name: it is now the Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing (AASP) Technical Committee. This name change reflects the expanding interests of the committee as evidenced by the recent integration of the music signal processing community.

The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 13 technical committees that support a broad selection of signal processing related activities defined by the scope of the Society. Recent policy revisions were made to ensure that Technical Committees remain at the forefront of innovation and interdisciplinary research and foster renewal and openness. Technical Committees now have the opportunity to expand their membership base by adding Affiliate TC Members.

The March 2010 "Best of the Web" column of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine presents online radar reflectivity databases, which are free of charge to the international research community. Databases such as these are used for the characterization of interference (including noise, sea clutter and land clutter, among others) in radar systems, and the development of signal processing techniques that reduce the detrimental effects of this unwanted interference.
