Society News

IEEE Day 2015 will be held on Tuesday, 6 October. This will be the sixth anniversary of IEEE members celebrating the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.

Since the first IEEE Day event in 2010, the number of events worldwide has grown over 600%, from 80 to over 520! The IEEE Day team needs you to help grow this annual event even larger.

There once was a time when traveling abroad seemed an exotic experience, suited for the heads of business or well-to-do families on vacation. Now traveling abroad is a way of the world. Professionals, students and families often travel several times a year for business and pleasure. As common as international travel is, many still do not understand the insurance coverages needed in order to be protected.

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is pleased to announce some exciting upcoming events and opportunities:

WIE Live Chat Series

Upcoming live chats include:

  • “Detour: Coping When Life Doesn’t Go According to Plan,” presented by Courtney Clark - Tuesday, 18 August 2015, 10:00 a.m. ET
  • “How do you motivate a person (or a team) to do something hard?” presented by Tara Chklovski - Wednesday, 26 August 2015, 1:00 p.m. ET

International Leadership Conference

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 21 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is happy to announce the addition of several new Chapters and Student Branch Chapters. We welcome the following SPS Chapters and wish them great success in their future activities and events:

The annual election ballots were sent to all eligible voting members via postal mail on 17 August. You can access and return your ballot electronically or use the postage-paid reply envelope included in your ballot package. Ballots must be received by 12 noon CST (17:00 UTC) on 1 October.

All candidates on this year’s ballot participated in a Q&A:

It’s that time of year to begin thinking about upcoming officer elections for your organizational units. Consider using the vTools online voting application. Hundreds of elections have been managed with vTools.Voting already. This powerful tool:

In early July, the Volunteer Leadership Training Program (VOLT) for 2015 was announced, and includes two tracks.

Track 1 covers the foundational knowledge of the IEEE organization. These materials were made available to all IEEE volunteers through the IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) website.

Access Track 1 courses (Log in with your IEEE Account and choose the “Volunteer Leadership Training Pre-Requisite” category to begin)

Are you a practicing engineer who would like to attend GlobalSIP 2015? Talk to your local Chapter Chair about how you can qualify for travel support to attend the conference in Orlando, Florida, USA this December!

The SPS Executive Committee recently approved an initiative that would provide limited Society support for SPS Chapters to send up to two members each to the IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP) from 14-16 December 2015.
