SCOPE

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) refers to the technologies that combine sensing and communication systems to utilize wireless resources efficiently, realize wide area environment sensing, and even to pursue mutual benefits. The technological advances on signal processing and wireless communication have made ISAC a reality. In particular, the combined use of mmWave frequencies and massive MIMO technology results in striking similarities between communication and radio sensing systems in terms of the hardware architecture, channel characteristics, and information processing pipeline. Thus, it has become possible to extend several radar missions, e.g., AoA/AoD estimation and moving target tracking, to address emerging communication challenges, such as beam management and resource allocation. In addition, the ultra-dense and cell-free wireless networks enable a comprehensive characterization of the propagation environment. These compactly deployed radio transceivers naturally form a ubiquitous radio sensing network that could provide sensing services to civilians. Therefore, there is a strong need to exploit such an enabler in a proper and smart way and create a synergy with advanced network protocols to support next-generation cellular networks and novel Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Benefiting from these advantages of ISAC, a wide variety of ISAC applications, research directions, and standardization opportunities will emerge. The state-of-the-art ISAC research mainly includes, but not limited to the following areas.

  • Information Theory to reveal the theoretical limits and fundamental tradeoffs from the aspects of information and signal processing theory.
  • Signal Processing to jointly design the waveform and interference management to achieve a balance between good communication and sensing performance.
  • Aerospace and Electronic Systems (Radar System) to integrate the communication functionality into the current radar systems to improve spectrum efficiency.
  • Vehicular Technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems to design the next generation vehicular systems with enhanced communication ability and sensing range with lower latency and high reliability at lower cost.
  • Mobile Computing to detect the gesture, sense the emotion and recognize activities of human via leveraging the sensing, computing and communication capabilities of mobile devices.

The ISAC TWG will bring together academic and industrial researchers in the SPS and related societies to identify and discuss the significant technical challenges, recent breakthroughs, and promote novel applications related to ISAC.
