The communication performance in Wi-Fi, cellular, smart grid, underwater acoustic, and many other modern systems, is limited by non-Gaussian noise/interference instead of Gaussian noise.

The PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2015 is now open! This year's challenge is 'Reducing False Arrhythmia Alarms in the ICU'. False alarms in the ICU can lead to a disruption of care, impacting both the patient and the clinical staff through noise disturbances, desensitization to warnings and slowing of response times, leading to decreased quality of care. False alarm rates can be as high as 90% or more. To address this issue we have developed an expert-labelled data set of 1250 life-threatening arrhythmia alarms with five minutes of electrophysiological and pulsatile waveform data leading up to each alarm event. Competitors are challenged to devise a method of processing all the available data to reduce false alarms with minimal or no effect on true (vital) alarms.

The conference formerly known as the “Digital Signal Processing Workshop” (DSP Workshop) is now known as the “Signal Processing Workshop”. This name evolution is a reflection of the ever-expanding reach of signal processing --- to processing on graphs, or xampled processing of continuous time signals, or plenoptic sensors, or financial analysis, to name a few. On February 8, the Board of Directors of the IEEE voted to approve a set of amendments to the organization’s patent policy. Previously, the IEEE Standards Association (“IEEE-SA”) has established new rules that must be followed in all IEEE standards development activities. Those rules require that standards be developed under procedures that incorporate due process, openness, transparency, broad consensus building, and balance without dominance to ensure that all parties are heard.

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2010 and will serve until 31 December 2012. Seven candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions. The successful candidates represent a broad spectrum of the Signal Processing Society, and the Board of Governors will confirm the election results at the next meeting in November 2009. The successful candidates are: Alex Acero (Microsoft Corporation, USA), Antonia Papandreou-Suppappola (Arizona State University, USA), and Mats Viberg (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden).

The AE TC promotes the advancement of technologies and applications in audio and acoustic signal processing and to enhance interaction with similar organizations within IEEE and throughout the world. The TC is represented in several new SPS initiatives. The community around the AE-TC is looking forward to the next edition of the IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics (WASPAA 2009). The recent ICASSP 2009 was also a great success for the AE community and has led to an on-going Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing on "Processing reverberant speech: methodologies and applications", with manuscripts due by October 15, 2009.
