Abstract

This webinar, part of the new IEEE JSTSP webinar series on recent special issues (Sis), will overview the Joint Communication and Radar Sensing (JCR) for Emerging Applications. The webinar will start with a brief motivation of the area of JCR, followed by a summary of the technical papers that appear in the SI. The next part of the webinar will overview the wider state of the art in JCR based on the overview paper titled “An Overview of Signal Processing Techniques for Joint Communication and Radar Sensing” by A. Zhang, F. Liu, C. Masouros, R. Heath, Z. Feng, L. Zheng, and A. Petropulu that appears in the November 2021 issue, with recent literature updates, open problems, and future works.

Biography:

Christos Masouros

Christos Masouros (SMIEEE, MIET) received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 2004, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2006 and 2009, respectively.

In 2008, he was a research intern at Philips Research Labs, UK. Between 2009-2010, he was a Research Associate in the University of Manchester and between 2010-2012 a Research Fellow in Queen's University Belfast. In 2012, he joined University College London as a Lecturer. He has held a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship between 2011-2016.

Since 2019, he has been a Full Professor of Signal Processing and Wireless Communications in the Information and Communication Engineering research group, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and affiliated with the Institute for Communications and Connected Systems, University College London. His research interests lie in the field of wireless communications and signal processing with particular focus on green communications, large scale antenna systems, integrated sensing and communications, interference mitigation techniques for MIMO and multicarrier communications.

Dr. Masouros is an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, the IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing, and the Editor-at-Large for IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. He has been an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Communications Letters, and a Guest Editor for a number of IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications issues. He is a founding member and Vice-Chair of the IEEE Emerging Technology Initiative on Integrated Sensing and Communications, Vice Chair of the IEEE Special Interest Group on Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), and Chair of the IEEE Special Interest Group on Energy Harvesting Communication Networks. He was the co-recipient of the 2021 IEEE SPS Young Author Best Paper Award. He was the recipient of the Best Paper Awards at IEEE GlobeCom and IEEE WCNC conferences in 2015 and 2019, respectively, and has been recognized as an Exemplary Editor for the IEEE Communications Letters, and as an Exemplary Reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Communications

 

Fan Liu

Fan Liu is currently an Assistant Professor of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He received the Ph.D. and the BEng. degrees from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), Beijing, China, in 2018 and 2013, respectively. He has previously held academic positions in the University College London (UCL), first as a Visiting Researcher from 2016 to 2018, and then as a Marie Curie Research Fellow from 2018 to 2020.

His research interests lie in the general area of signal processing and wireless communications, and in particular in the area of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), where he is recognized as one of the leading researchers. He has 10 papers selected as IEEE ComSoc Best Readings. He is the founding Academic Chair of the IEEE ComSoc ISAC Emerging Technology Initiative (ISAC-ETI), an Associate Editor of the IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing and the IEEE Communications Letters, the Lead Guest Editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) Special Issue on "Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC)", and a Guest Editor of the IEEE Wireless Communications Special Issue on "Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G".

Dr. Liu has served as the organizer and co-chair for several workshops, special sessions, and tutorials in flagship IEEE conferences, including ICC, GLOBECOM, ICASSP, and SPAWC. He is a TPC Co-Chair of the 2nd IEEE Joint Communication and Sensing (JC&S) Symposium, a Workshop and Special Session Co-Chair of the ISWCS 2022, and will serve as a Track Co-Chair for the IEEE WCNC 2024. He is a member of the IMT-2030 (6G) ISAC Task Group. He was listed in the World's Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for citation impact in 2021. He was the recipient of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award of 2021, the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award of Chinese Institute of Electronics of 2019, the EU Marie Curie Individual Fellowship in 2018, and has been named as an Exemplary Reviewer for IEEE TWC/TCOM/COMML five times.

 

J. Andrew Zhang

J. Andrew Zhang (MIEEE 2005, SMIEEE 2010) received the B.Sc. degree from Xi'an JiaoTong University, China, in 1996, the M.Sc. degree from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China, in 1999, and the Ph.D. degree from the Australian National University, in 2004.

Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Data Engineering and the director of the Radio Sensing and Pattern Analysis (RaSPA) Laboratory, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia. From 2010 to 2016, he was a researcher with Data61, CSIRO, Australia, from 2004 to 2010, the Networked Systems, NICTA, Australia, and from 1999 to 2001, ZTE Corp., Nanjing, China. His research interests are in the area of signal processing for wireless communications and sensing, with current focuses on joint communications and radio/radar sensing, and autonomous vehicular networks.

Dr. Zhang has published over 220 journal and conference papers and has won five best paper awards including in IEEE ICC 2013. He is a recipient of CSIRO Chairman's Medal and the Australian Engineering Innovation Award in 2012 for exceptional research achievements in multi-gigabit wireless communications. He is serving as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, and the publication co-chair of the IEEE Communication Society's Integrated Sensing and Communication Emerging Technology Initiative (ISAC-ETI).
