The IEEE annual election balloting period began 15 August 2014. Eligible voting members can access their ballot electronically through the IEEE Annual Election Ballot Material page or return the paper ballot they received via first-class postal mail. The last day for receipt of IEEE annual election ballots is 1 October 2014, by 12:00 p.m. CT/17:00 UTC.

Candidates for the 2015 IEEE President-Elect include IEEE Fellows Tariq S. Durrani, Frederick C. Mintzer, and Barry L. Shoop.

The 2014 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) took place in Florence, Italy from May 4th – 9th 2014. Recordings of the opening ceremony and plenary sessions are now available for IEEE Signal Processing Society members on SigView the society’s online video archive and are accessible by clicking on the links below.

The gender disparity in various disciplines of engineering has been a longstanding issue in the engineering community and IEEE societies alike. While meaningful strides have been taken to increase women’s involvement in STEM fields overall, women are still largely underrepresented in these fields, and especially in higher-ranking and leadership positions. In fact, of the Signal Processing Society’s more than 16,500 members, only 6.6% of them are women.

Each year, IEEE recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions or exercised leadership within IEEE-designated technical areas. The Signal Processing Society is honored to announce three of its members as recipients of the 2015 IEEE Technical Field Awards:

IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award

The 9th annual Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge–Europe (SAUC-E) will be held at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), from 20 September to 26 September 2014.
Held since 2006, SAUC-E challenges the next generation of engineers to design and build an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) capable of performing realistic missions.

The annual election ballots were sent to all eligible voting members via postal mail on 15 August. You can access and return your ballot electronically or use the postage-paid reply envelope included in your ballot package. Ballots must be received by 12 noon CST (17:00 UTC) on 1 October.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) invites nominations for
the position of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks (TSIPN) for a 3-year term starting 1 January 2015. TSIPN is a new journal co-sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Communications Society and Computer Society, launching in 2015, and the EIC is expected to play a major role in the start up.

The Signal Processing Society has added a new journal to its portfolio: The IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging. This new, online-only, Transactions will publish original research results where computation plays an integral role in the image formation process. Original research will be published on all areas of computational imaging ranging from the principles and theory of computational imaging, to modeling paradigms for computational imaging, to image formation methods, to the latest innovative computational imaging system designs.

The following SPS Distinguished lectures will be held in the upcoming months

Overview The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $40,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2014 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. All proposals must include the involvement of one or more local Chapters to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive. Access the application here.
