News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
by David Miller - MLSP TC Liaison to eNews
The Machine Learning for Signal Processing Technical Committee (MLSP TC) is at the interface between theory and application, developing novel theoretically-inspired methodologies targeting both longstanding and emergent signal processing applications. A main TC-sponsored annual event is the IEEE Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing. The Nineteenth MLSP Workshop was held on 2-4 September 2009 in the city of Grenoble, France, with picturesque views of all sides of mountains leading up to the Alps. The General Chair for this meeting was Christian Jutten and the Program Chairs were Jocelyn Chanussot and Tulay Adali. There were 76 oral and poster paper presentations at the Workshop.
The plenary speakers were Jeanny Herault (visual scene processing), Lars Kai Hansen (cognitive component analysis for digital media), and Klaus-Robert Muller (kernel machines and applications to brain-machine interfaces). Four papers were selected for Best Paper awards.
The workshop also featured special sessions on Markov models, on machine learning for remote sensing, and on brain-computer interfaces. Tutorials were given by Vince Calhoun (on group fMRI and multimodal independent component analysis) and Tulay Adali (on complex-valued, adaptive signal processing algorithms). The TC wishes to thank the organizers for creating a stimulating meeting in a beautiful atmosphere.
MLSP 2010 is scheduled to be held in Lapland, Finland, chaired by Erkki Oja and Sami Kaski.
