News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
by Ali Sayed, SPS Vice President-Publications
Thomson Reuters has recently released its 2009 Journal Citation Reports. Some of our journals stood out in terms of their impact factor and citation performance.
I am pleased to announce that the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine has ranked first among all IEEE publications (125 in total) and among all publications within the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Category (245 in total), and ahead of the Proceedings of IEEE, in terms of its impact factor. The magazine's 2009 impact factor is the highest among all these publications and stands now at 4.914, a healthy improvement over its 2008 impact factor which stood at 3.758 when the Magazine was ranked 9th.
In terms of the total number of citations, the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing is ranked 5th among all IEEE publications (125 in total) and among publications within the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Category (245 in total) with a total number of 15,879 citations in 2009. The journals ranked in the first four positions included the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (25,950 citations), the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (22,915 citations), the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis (22,851 citations), and the Proceedings of IEEE (17,919 citations). The performance by IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing is excellent given that the IEEE Signal Processing Society publishes several separate high profile journals (in the areas of image processing, speech, and information forensics and security). For example, the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing is also published by our Society and it attracted a total of 11,472 citations in 2009.
We would like to thank our staff and volunteers for their dedicated work on behalf of our publications, and particularly our reviewers, associate editors, and editors-in-chief. Our publications are on a drive to ensure timely and speedy handling of manuscript submissions. Our volunteers are also enforcing higher standards during the entire review process. Our aim is to publish high-quality articles that make an impact. We have also been working vigorously to expand the outreach of our IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. We launched last year its digital edition, which is emailed to readers across the Globe with the click of a button. Easier, faster, and electronic access to the magazine is changing the way our readers access its articles and many other features. We also re-designed the magazine's cover and started a well-received industry column, and revamped the design of our e-newsletter. These changes are meant to connect more closely with our readers and to keep them apprised of our society news and our society publications.
We congratulate again our Magazine for its rise to the top spot among all EE journals.
