Welcome to the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee's Newsletter!
This issue features the next installment of our regular column, "Getting to Know Your Fellow Researchers", highlighting Douglas O'Shaughnessy, who is a Professor at INRS-Télécommunications (University of Quebec) in Montreal, Canada and the author of the textbook Speech Communications: Human and Machine (IEEE Press, 2000). He has contributed immensely to the IEEE society for a number of years now.

The internship program at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) gives students excellent opportunities to work in an industrial research lab environment side-by-side with world-class researchers. This program emphasizes close collaboration with a particular researcher or members of a small team. MERL considers graduate students from all over the world. As many of our projects benefit from specialized knowledge in a given field, graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. typically fill the majority of internship openings.
SPS Announces 2018 Class of Distinguished Lecturers, the Signal Processing Data Science Distinguished Lecturer and the New Distinguished Industry Speaker Program.
International Audio Laboratories Erlangen is jointly operated by the Faculty of Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Institute for Integrated Circuits at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. It conducts both fundamental and applied research on novel audio technology. This involves a close and long-term collaboration between both institutions stipulated by contract. Eventually, more than 50 scientists will work in this internationally unique research facility.
The Faculty of Engineering and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft invite applications for a
Manual operation of hearing assistive devices is cumbersome in various situations. With advances in machine learning and speech technology, voice interfaces due to their convenience will be widely deployed for hearing assistive devices and they can be personalized and offer richer functionalities. Hearing assistive devices are characterized by strict memory and computational complexity constraints and the fact that they are expected to operate flawlessly, even in acoustically challenging situations.
Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (IVMSP TC) promotes and guides the advancement of the field of image, video, and multidimensional signal processing.
