ICASSP 2011 introduced a new type of event in its technical program, namely "Trends in Signal Processing". In total, all 13 sessions were held during lunch time from Wednesday till Friday (May 25 to May 27, 2011), and each lasted 30 minutes. In each session, a Technical Committee of the Signal Processing Society featured a few expert summaries that highlighted the most significant advances and upcoming trends within the TC's area over the past year. These “Trends in Signal Processing” sessions were well attended by enthusiastic audiences. The expert summaries presented in these “Trends in Signal Processing” sessions will later be published in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.

Recognizing the increased relevance of, and research interest in this area, the Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society organized a special session on Secure Signal Processing at the recently held ICASSP 2011 at Prague on May 25, 2011.

An Industrial PhD Studentship funded by the ESPRC through the 2011 Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award Scheme (DHPA) is available in the Centre for Communications Research (CCR) at the University of Bristol in collaboration with Toshiba Research Europe Ltd (TREL).
The project is entitled “Compressive sensing for M2M applications including healthcare and smart energy”.

Joachim Thiemann (McGill University), “A Sparse Auditory Envelope Representation with Iterative Reconstruction for Audio Coding”, Advisor: Prof. Peter Kabal
In this thesis, the author investigates perceptual domain coding by using a representation designed to contain only the audible information regardless of whether reconstruction can be performed efficiently. The perceptual representation is based on a multichannel Basilar membrane model, where each channel is decomposed into envelope and carrier components.
