The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) elected two new officers who will start their terms on 1 January 2015. Also, six new Editors-in-Chief were appointed for IEEE Signal Processing Society journals starting 1 January 2015.

For our June 2014 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of machine learning for detection of malicious communications, covering patents granted recently for methods for detecting malicious botnets, malware, or email transmissions.

Frequency estimation of time-varying sinusoidal signals is an important topic in science and engineering that has found applications in many fields. The purpose of this Special Issue is to present new and effective methods for periodic signal parameter estimation together with their use in various application areas. Submissions of comprehensive overviews of methodological advances are strongly encouraged, as well as papers dealing with new and emerging applications.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter of the Year Award will be presented for the fourth time in 2015. The award will be presented annually to a Chapter that has provided their membership with the highest quality of programs, activities and services.
