ICASSP 2025: A Model for Sustainable Conferences

The 2025 International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP), a Flagship Conference for SPS, demonstrated how a major international event can be both impactful and environmentally conscious. This pilot began a broader initiative to align all SPS events with environmental and social responsibility goals.

Highlights from the report:

  • The total waste diversion rate was 62%.
  • 77% of all served meals throughout the conference were vegetarian, reducing tCO2e emissions by 25% compared to a meat menu.
  • 100% of food served during the Banquet was locally sourced.
  • Throughout the conference, food was stored & served in glass & ceramic containers, with reusable paper signs used for labelling the dishes.
  • Locally handcrafted delegate bags from Telangana, were produced by 20 women through Abhihaara Social Enterprise, supporting their livelihood for eight weeks.
  • By using electric-powered buses instead of diesel-powered buses, event ground transportation emissions were cut by 61%.
