News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

January 2013

The purpose of the Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (IVMSP TC) is to promote and guide the advancement of the field of image, video, and multidimensional signal processing.

DARPA has officially announced a new DARPA Challenge, the Spectrum Challenge - a new competition to design effective software-defined radio protocols using USRPs.

In recent years, signal processing applications that deal with user-related data have aroused privacy concerns. For instance, face recognition and personalized recommendations rely on privacy-sensitive information that can be abused if the signal processing is executed on remote servers or in the cloud.

IEEE has announced the 2013 recipients of the IEEE Medals, Prize Paper, Service Awards, Corporate Recognitions and/or Honorary Membership awards.

The following six Signal Processing Society members received IEEE Awards:

IEEE FOUNDERS MEDAL to LEO BERANEK (LFIEEE) – Founder (retired), Bolt, Beranek, and Newman, Boston, MA, USA

IEEE RICHARD W. HAMMING MEDAL to ARTHUR ROBERT CALDERBANK (FIEEE) – Dean of Natural Sciences, Duke University, Durham, NC, USA

Cooperation is known as an effective strategy in nature to achieve individual or common goals and is a key element in evolution for optimization, as Darwin pointed out in his famous work. Cooperation among weaker individuals (such as hyenas) has the potential to outperform stronger individuals (cheetahs) agnostic to the principle of cooperation.

Each issue of the “Reader’s  Choice” column in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine contains a list of articles published by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) that ranked among the top 100 most downloaded IEEE Xplore articles.

To obtain the data through August 2012, please check the list in the November issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The table contains the citation information for each article and the rank obtained in IEEE Xplore.
