Researchers from MIT, Microsoft and Adobe have developed a "visual microphone" that can recover audio signals from vibrations of objects in a video. "When sound hits an object, it causes the object to vibrate," said Abe Davis, a Ph.D. candiate at MIT and first author of the new paper [1]. "The motion of this vibration creates a very subtle visual signal that's usually invisible to the naked eye.

The gender disparity in various disciplines of engineering has been a longstanding issue in the engineering community and IEEE societies alike. While meaningful strides have been taken to increase women’s involvement in STEM fields overall, women are still largely underrepresented in these fields, and especially in higher-ranking and leadership positions. In fact, of the Signal Processing Society’s more than 16,500 members, only 6.6% of them are women.

(Drexel University) “Robust Automatic Multi-Sperm Tracking in Time-Lapse Images”,  Advisor: Kam, Moshe (2014)Human sperm cell counting, tracking and motility analysis is of significant interest to biologists studying sperm function and to medical practitioners evaluating male infertility. Today, the prevailing method for analyzing sperm at fertility clinics and research laboratories is laborious and subjective.
