News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

July 2010

The election of Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2011 through 31 December 2013) and the new Directors-at-Large (term 1 January 2011 through 31 December 2012) of the IEEE SPS Board of Governors is now open. This year's election offers SPS members the opportunity to cast their votes via the web at https://eballot3.votenet.com/IEEE_SE. Ballots must be received at IEEE no later than 1 September 2010 in order to be counted.

SAMIEEE is a web-based ad-hoc query tool that provides volunteers with the ability to gather useful information regarding their Chapter's membership data.

The IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia Signal Processing invites proposals to host the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP) in 2012. Proposals are open to all regions, but to keep with the practice of regional rotation, preference will be given to proposals from Regions 1~7 and 9 (America and Canada).

The IEEE Signal Processing Magazine has ranked first among all IEEE publications (125 in total) and among all publications within the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Category (245 in total) in terms of its impact factor.

The Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee for each Technical Committee is currently seeking nominations for new Members, as well as the Vice Chair position for some Technical Committees. Nominations for both positions should be submitted directly to each Technical Committee’s Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee. Nominations must be received no later than 15 August 2010.

IEEE announced the launch of IEEE Xplore Mobile, which incorporates enhancements based on user feedback collected from a beta test period that began in June 2009. IEEE Xplore Mobile gives users the ability to conveniently perform searches of over two million technical documents with any mobile device connected to the Internet. To try IEEE Xplore Mobile, go to http://m.ieeexplore.ieee.org.

Applicants are invited for one Postdoc position starting Fall 2010 in the field of wireless networks supporting multimedia applications. Successful candidate will be working in the research group of Prof. Lin Cai (please visit www.ece.uvic.ca/~cai for details), in Dept. of E&CE, University of Victoria (UVic), Canada. The contract length is one-year and is renewable subject to performance and funding availability.

The human brain is organized into a collection of interacting networks with specialized functions to support various cognitive functions. At the micro level, the brain elements consist of single neurons, the amount of which often treads the realm of hundreds of billions, and possible connections between them numbering in the order of 10¹⁵. At a more macro level, the brain is parcellated into a number of regions, where each region accounts for the activity and coactivity of a population of neurons.
