It’s that time of the year, and IEEE members can begin their holiday shopping. During the last couple of months a few new Signal Processing and Machine Learning contests were initiated. Some of the ongoing ones with a strong relation to Signal Processing include a contest for whale recognition and one for building an AI system.

IEEE Future Directions is your resource to emerging technologies within IEEE. The team has identified specific technologies as primary focus areas and has established them as formal initiatives to engage IEEE and the general public. For each initiative, you can find a wealth of knowledge, resources, and opportunities to participate. Visit each featured portal for access to upcoming conferences, news articles, technical papers, related standards, professional organizations, and academic programs.

WIE-Ericsson Live Chat Series

Registration is now open for IEEEXtreme 9.0, scheduled for 24 October 2015. IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE member, compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. The registration deadline is 12 October.

Although IEEE Collabratec has been freely available for over six months, the formal launch and marketing began on 21 September. You may have already started to see messaging within IEEE communication vehicles such as Society newsletters, membership emails, ieee.org, Spectrum advertising, and various online social mediums outside of IEEE.

You may have already had a chance to connect and collaborate with IEEE members and technology professionals on IEEE Collabratec and are aware of its benefits. Below are some highlights:

During the last couple of months a few new Signal Processing and Machine Learning contests were initiated. Some of the ongoing ones with a strong relation to Signal Processing include a Kaggle contest for predicting hand movements from EEG data and one on forecasting quote prices of tubes in construction engineering.

As a special benefit to IEEE members for the month of August, IEEE-USA will offer “Work-Life Balance -- Book 2,” by Peggy Hutcheson. In “Book 1,” Hutcheson introduced some of the major issues that lead to varying degrees of balance in a person's sense of satisfaction in life. In “Book 2,” she explores work-life balance, with regard to career stages -- young professional, mid-career, and late career. Available 1 August to 15 September.
