Neural networks with rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation functions (a.k.a. ReLU networks) have achieved great empirical success in various domains. Nonetheless, existing results for learning ReLU networks either pose assumptions on the underlying data distribution being, e.g., Gaussian, or require the network size and/or training size to be sufficiently large.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society invites nominations for the SPS Distinguished Industry Speaker (DIS) Program and the Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program. Please note that the Distinguished Industry Speaker positions will supplement the regular Distinguished Lecturer Program. 

Most evolutionary algorithms and other meta-heuristic search methods typically assume that there are explicit objective functions available for fitness evaluations. In the real world, such explicit objective functions may not exist in many cases. Instead, computationally very intensive numerical simulations, such as computational fluid dynamic simulations or finite element analysis, must be conducted.

Erik Meijering, the current Chair of SPS’s Bio Imaging and Signal Processing (BISP) Technical Committee, has been pursuing his passion in signal processing from the onset of his education. Realizing early on the vast and evolving ways that signal processing can unlock solutions for the advancement of technology, Erik’s studies began in digital image processing and eventually focused on applications in biomedical imaging for his PhD.

Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) hold tremendous potential to advance our society and are commonly seen as the 4^th major disruptive technology wave after PC, the Internet/Web, and mobile.
