Video of the Month: A Mobile Game with Physiologically Aware Virtual Humans

Depression and anxiety are common mental disorders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 14% of the world population suffers from at least one severe mood disorder during the course of their life. Researches from the University of Barcelona investigate the interaction with affective and physiologically aware virtual human characters for mood and physiological modulation.

2015 Member-Driven Initiatives – Funding Available

Overview The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $40,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2015 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter. Allocation of funds will be competitive. Access the application here.

SPS Young Professionals meet during ICIP 2015

As an outreach effort to its members, the Signal Processing Society (SPS) sponsored a social reception for members of the Quebec City Chapter. The young professionals attending IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP 2015) were also invited. The IEEE Young Professionals Program (formerly known as GOLD – Graduates Of the Last Decade) is intended for IEEE members who have received their first professional degree within the last fifteen years and aims at helping young professionals evaluate their career goals, polish their professional image, and create the building blocks of a lifelong and diverse professional network.

SPS Announces 2016 Class of Distinguished Lecturers

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) announced the 2016 Class of Distinguished Lecturers. Six colleagues were honored and they are: Jan Allebach (Purdue University); Yoram Bresler (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign); Peyman Milanfar (Google Inc.); Hermann Ney (RWTH Aachen University); Paris Smaragdis (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign); and Josiane Zerubia (INRIA).

13 SPS Members Elevated to Senior Member

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 13 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow. The new Senior Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society are:

Obituary for Alfred Fettweis

Professor Alfred Leo Maria Fettweis, one of the pioneers of digital signal processing passed away on August 20, 2015 in Bochum, Germany. Our community has lost a giant who made seminal contributions not only to engineering, but also to science. His ideas were visionary and far ahead of his time.
