Zhou, Yin. (University of Delaware) “Sparse signal processing for machine learning and computer vision”, Advisor: Barner, Kenneth E. Signal sparse representation solves inverse problems to find succinct expressions of data samples as a linear combination of a few atoms in the dictionary or codebook.

Use vTools.Meetings for More than Just Submitting Reports

vTools Meetings is more than a place to file your unit meeting (L31) reports. The meeting scheduler feeds multiple sources, making it possible to publicize your meeting worldwide. RSS, iCal, and XML feeds are also available for custom data delivery. The meeting registration module enables Sections, Chapters, and Affinity Groups to accept credit card payments from meeting attendees and have funds deposited directly into the organizational unit’s (OU) Concentration Banking account.

Welcome New Members in your Section and Invite them to Attend an Orientation Webinar

IEEE Section Chairs and Section Membership Development Chairs receive a monthly e-mail notification regarding newly joined members in your Section. The current list of new members (those who joined in the past 30 days) is available through SAMIEEE, your volunteer analytics tool. The report provides member contact information: name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, type of membership (traditional, e-membership), Societies joined, grade, and reasons for joining IEEE.

SPS TC Jobs Marketplace

Now IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form at the related TC section pages. To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and clicking on a particular TC. A link for the form can be found in the sidebar menu of the TC pages.

New Society Officers for 2016

The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) elected two new officers who will start their terms on 1 January 2016: Ali H. Sayed (University of California) will serve as 2016-2017 SPS President-Elect and Walter Kellermann (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) will serve as 2016-2018 SPS Vice President-Technical Directions.

Results of the SP Cup 2015

The IEEE Signal Processing Cup (SP Cup) is a competition that provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to form teams and work together to solve a challenging and interesting real-world problem using signal-processing techniques and methods. Three teams are selected to present their work, and prizes will be awarded at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP).

Contests in Signal Processing and Machine Learning

During the last couple of months a few new Signal Processing and Machine Learning contests were initiated. Some of the ongoing ones with a strong relation to Signal Processing include: From the domain of public health, there is a Kaggle contest asking to predict whether or not West Nile virus is present, for a given time and location in the area of Chigago. The predictor variables include aspects of weather, geography, and maps of areas that were sprayed to kill mosquitos.
