Society Constitution Amendments

At its 15 September 2011 meeting, the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society passed amendments to the Society’s Constitution document. Procedures require approval by the IEEE Technical Activities Board, which has already been secured, followed by a 30-day period for member comment. The amendment is considered approved unless one-half percent or more of the Society’s membership objects, in writing, within 30 days of publication. Publication here fulfills the latter portion of the approval requirement.

Attention International Students: STEM Education Bill Introduced in Congress

On 5 October, Congressman Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) introduced a bill into Congress that will change the process international students use to become American citizens.  The bill will reduce the time between students earning their advanced degrees and when they can get a green card from between five and ten years to less than one. The bill, H.R. 3146, applies to all international students who earn a Masters or Ph.D.

“Trends” Expert Overview Sessions Revived at ICASSP 2011: Part 2

At the 2011 IEEE ICASSP in Prague, the program committee revived the idea of expert overview sessions called “Trends,” which are summary talks authored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committees and presented by their keynote experts. Starting from its September issue, IEEE Signal Processing Magazine publishes a serious of three columns summarizing the “Trends” expert sessions.

vTools News: New Tools, New User Community

A beta version of the new tool to report new geographic organizational unit officers or officer changes has been released. vTools.OfficerReporting enables authorized geographic organizational unit volunteers to submit officer reporting online, providing automatic validation and updates to the central IEEE database. Volunteers can also view existing officers, enter new officers, and remove or replace existing officers. A detailed audit log tracks changes per volunteer and per organizational unit.
