The IEEE Signal Processing Society Industry Board and the Santa Clara Valley Chapter are pleased to announce an upcoming event, Video Coding Standards in the Age of AI, to be held on July 30, 2026, in Palo Alto, CA.

As AI continues to evolve, it is playing an increasingly important role in next-generation signal processing and multimedia technologies. At the same time, major international and open-source standards organizations are actively exploring how AI can be integrated into future standards. This event will bring together experts from industry and the standards community to discuss the latest advances in AI for video coding, ongoing standardization efforts, and future research directions.

Speakers

This event features distinguished speakers from industry and the standards community:

  • Arianne Hinds (INCITS L3 Chair)
  • Debargha Mukherjee (Google, Principal Engineer / Director)
  • Alican Nalci (Meta, Research Scientist)
  • Leo Zhao (Tencent, Principal Research Scientist)

Agenda

The evening program will feature invited talks and an interactive panel discussion on the intersection of AI and video coding, covering the latest research advances, standardization efforts, and future trends.

  • 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM: Networking
  • 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM: Invited Talks
  • 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM: Panel Discussion

Whether you are a researcher, engineer, student, or practitioner interested in AI and video compression, we warmly invite you to join us for an evening of technical discussions and networking with leaders from industry, academia, and the standards community.

Arianne Hinds is the Chair of INCITS L3 and has played a leading role in video coding standardization and industry collaboration.

Debargha Mukherjee is a Principal Engineer/Director at Google, where he leads next-generation video codec research and development. He has made significant contributions to image and video compression and was elevated to IEEE Fellow for leadership in developing video coding standards for the video streaming industry.

Alican Nalci is a Research Scientist and Tech Lead at Meta, focusing on video compression, media delivery, and AI-driven media technologies. His research interests include AI-based image and video coding, codec design and implementation, large-scale video deployment, and immersive 3D scene compression.

Leo Zhao is a Principal Research Scientist and Tech Lead at Tencent Media Lab. He serves as Chair of the Software Implementation Working Group and as a Software Coordinator within the AOMedia Codec Working Group, where he leads the development of next-generation open video coding technologies.
