News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

March 2013

Bipartisan legislation introduced in the Senate on 29 January includes the largest increase ever to the H-1B program.

The bill, S. 169, would more than triple the size of the H-1B program, while making nominal increases to the EB green card program.  If passed, the bill would be a boon to outsourcing companies while costing American workers tens of thousands of jobs.

If you are currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Computer Engineering, here is your opportunity to pursue an exciting co-op opportunity with Raytheon!

Raytheon's Electrical Design Directorate (EDD) provides engineering design, integration and production to core radar, sonar, torpedo and combat system competencies including process and control, integration and test, power systems, torpedo and sonar electronics, receivers and exciters, antennas and microwave subassemblies.

ExxonMobil’s Corporate Strategic Research Laboratory has an immediate opening for a full-time staff position in the areas of data analytics, machine learning, and mathematical optimization within our Data Analytics and Optimization Section.

The laboratory is located 50 miles from New York City in scenic western New Jersey.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Section was awarded the IEEE Signal Processing Society Chapter of the Year 2011 award in 2012. Its Chair, Mohammad Faizal Ahmad Fauzi, received the award on behalf of the chapter at ICASSP 2012 in Kyoto, Japan. This achievement was in recognition of the many activities successfully carried out by IEEE SPS Malaysia Section, including international conferences, free workshops, technical visits, social programmes, membership drives and administrative duties.

The Spring 2013 edition of the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee’s Newsletter is now online.

Did you know that IEEE-USA has authorized the presentation of Awards and Recognition for the purpose of recognizing excellence, outstanding service and contributions in furtherance of its objectives?

The awards are administered by IEEE-USA's Awards and Recognition Committee and have been approved by the IEEE Awards Board and the IEEE Board of Directors. IEEE-USA Awards are given to recognize professionalism, technical achievement, and literary contributions to public awareness and understanding of the engineering profession in the United States.

Now there is a wonderful opportunity open to all IEEE consultants to provide additional information and networking: the IEEE Consultants Network.

The IEEE Consultants Network has been created to compliment what local consultants networks are doing in their Regions and Sections. By joining the IEEE Consultants Network, IEEE members will receive the AICN quarterly consultants newsletter, invitations to IEEE-USA consultant webinars, and they will be first in line to receive any special AICNCC information announcements.

At first glance, processing of encrypted signals seems like an oxymoron: once signals are encrypted the necessary information to do any meaningful processing is obscured. Fortunately this contradiction is only seemingly, and there is a growing community of researchers exploring and discovering new methods to manipulate encrypted signals.

In March 2013, the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine brings you a special issue on signal processing in the encrypted domain (SPED).

This Call for Proposal is distributed on behalf of the Steering Committee for the 2016 and 2017 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) to be held in summer of both years.

Jury awards $1.17 billion in Carnegie Mellon's patent infringement case against Marvell Technology Group Ltd. and Marvell Semiconductor Inc.
