IEEE SPS Bangalore Chapter: Twenty-Five Years of Excellence in Signal Processing
The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Bangalore Chapter stands as one of the most active and globally recognized chapters within the SPS community. Established in 2000 under the leadership of V. U. Reddy, the chapter was envisioned as a bridge between India's leading academic institutions and the global signal processing ecosystem. Over the past twenty-five years, this vision has evolved into a large, dynamic, and globally connected community of more than 1,500 members, supported by an extensive network of over 35 student branches across Karnataka.
The Bangalore Chapter demonstrated exceptional activity and impact, organizing and supporting more than sixty technical events that encompassed seasonal schools, workshops, industry forums, and international collaborations. The IEEE SPS Seasonal School on AI Trends in Signal Processing offered an intensive five-day program integrating theoretical foundations with hands-on training in speech, image, and biomedical signal processing, attracting over one hundred participants from academia and industry. The IEEE SPS Industry Forum on Biomedical Signal Processing and the Metaverse, hosted at Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore, brought together leading experts to discuss advances in Generative AI, immersive technologies, and digital health. The chapter's active involvement in flagship conferences such as ICASSP and the long-standing SPCOM series further reinforced its strong global technical footprint.

Education and inclusive outreach remain defining characteristics of the Bangalore Chapter, spanning the entire talent pipeline from school students to advanced researchers. Initiatives such as Education on Wheels have introduced mobile laboratory-based learning to K–12 students, while Workshop on Wheels and K12 Science for Signal Processing have provided hands-on exposure to foundational electronics and signal processing concepts. Alongside these, the chapter has conducted deep learning bootcamps, faculty development programs, and authorship workshops, enabling continuous upskilling and research capacity building across academia.
Beyond technical activities, the Bangalore Chapter has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and societal impact. It has actively supported IDEASPRING in collaboration with Titan Company Limited, the IEEE International Conference for Women in Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (ICWITE), and the PROGRESS workshop, all of which promote inclusive participation aligned with societal needs.

The sustained excellence of the IEEE SPS Bangalore Chapter has earned it multiple global honors, including the 2025 SPS Chapter of the Year Award, along with certification for high-quality programs and services for the period 2024–2027. With its continued focus on emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, Generative AI, and biomedical signal processing, the Bangalore Chapter is well positioned to shape the future of signal processing and to serve as a model for high-impact professional communities worldwide.
