The 2026 Medical Imaging Best Paper Award Nomination Period is Now Open! We are officially soliciting nominations from our readership, Guest Editors, and the Editorial Board to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging.

Eligibility and Judging

To be eligible for the 2026 award, a paper must have been published as a final publication (not Early Access) in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (T-MI) in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025. Papers will be judged based on originality, subject matter, timeliness, potential impact, and presentation quality.

To ensure fairness and integrity, nominators must adhere to the following criteria:

  • No self-nominations are allowed.
  • The nominator must not be a former supervisor or student of a nominated paper's author.
  • The nominator cannot have co-authored any paper(s) with the nominated paper's authors in the past 10 years.
  • Cross-nominations (where an author of the nominated paper has previously nominated one of the nominator's papers) are prohibited.

How to Submit a Nomination

All nominations must be submitted through the online submission form. Your submission should include the following:

  • The nominator's details.
  • The bibliographic information for the nominated paper.
  • A short statement of support (less than 500 words) explaining the rationale for the nomination.

Important: The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2026.

2026 Selection Process and Timeline

  • 1 September: The T-MI Editor-in-Chief (EIC) solicits nominations and forms a Best Paper Award Committee from senior editorial board members to screen them.
  • 30 November: Final deadline to submit nominations via the online form.
  • 1 December: The Award Committee, chaired by the EIC, screens the nominations. The chair distributes the list to the Committee for final selection.
  • 17 December: The selection is completed. The EIC notifies the recipients (copying the Executive Office).

The T-MI Best Paper Award will be formally presented at the ISBI Conference Award Ceremony in the name of our four sponsoring societies: IEEE-EMBS, IEEE-SPS, IEEE-NPSS, and IEEE-UFFC.
