Greetings to everyone as we prepare to celebrate the 75^th anniversary of SPS during 2023! Membership of SPS, or any group, is based on the relationships, built between members. The IEEE Signal Processing Society has observed that sustained relationships lead to sustained membership growth. In its efforts to build a large and strong base of membership, SPS has spent the past few years focusing its attention on Student Members. 

Brain data are inherently large scale, multidimensional, and noisy. Indeed, advances in imaging and sensor technology allow recordings of ever-increasing spatio-temporal resolution. Multidimensional, as time series data are recorded at multiple locations (electrodes, voxels), from multiple subjects, under various conditions.

Dr. Li is a Singaporean scientist, and a Chinese Teochew native. He is now a Presidential Chair Professor at the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China. He did his Ph.D in digital signal processing of speech in 1990, and spent the past three decades to refine the technology. 

As the most widely-used spatial filtering approach for multi-channel signal separation, beamforming extracts the target signal arriving from a specific direction. We present an emerging approach based on multi-channel complex spectral mapping, which trains a deep neural network (DNN) to directly estimate the real and imaginary spectrograms of the target signal from those of the multi-channel noisy mixture.

Augmented reality devices of the future will likely fuse sensor data from several modalities, allowing multichannel speech enhancement algorithms to exploit, for example, head orientation and accurately estimated source directions.

Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) imaging is an exciting technology which uses time-resolved sensors to see objects that are hidden from view. In essence, NLoS imaging lets someone turn a wall into a mirror. This talk will highlight recent advances in NLoS imaging, with an emphasis on the algorithms which underlie their operation. 

Speech enhancement and speech separation are two related tasks, whose purpose is to extract either one or more target speech signals, respectively, from a mixture of sounds generated by several sources.
