To address rapidly growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for signal processing and data science, the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is launching a new special series on AI in Signal & Data Science, to be published within the IEEE Journal on Selected Topic in Signal Processing (JSTSP).

Nominations will be open 1 December - 15 June for IEEE Medals and Recognitions - IEEE’s highest awards. All are encouraged to submit a nomination for a worthy candidate within their technical fields.

Verbal communication in noisy environments can be hard. Speech enhancement using head-worn microphone arrays, such as hearing aids or augmented reality devices offers the opportunity to make it easier. However, the highly dynamic nature of the listening situation presents some challenges.

Dr. Mariane R. Petraglia graduated (Magna Cum Laude) in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Electronics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1985. She obtained the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1988 and 1991, respectively.

We all experienced the discomfort of communicating with our friends at a cocktail party or in a pub with loud background music. When difficult acoustic scenarios like these occur, we tend to rely on several visual cues, such as lips and mouth movement of the speaker, in order to understand the speech of interest.
