History of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

For nearly 70 years, the Signal Processing Society has been progressing the study of signal processing through research and education. When it was founded in 1948 as the Professional Group on Audio of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) – IEEE’s first society – the discipline of signal processing didn’t exist. During World War II, new applications for electronics including radar, sonar and computing arose, bringing a larger number of people into the electronics field. Likewise, it became increasingly desirable to establish groups for particular specialties.

Over the next few decades, the IRE Professional Group on Audio evolved to become known as the IEEE Signal Processing Society, helping establish the discipline. Today, signal processing is known as the enabling technology for the generation, transformation and interpretation of information and the Signal Processing Society has more than 19,000 members through 170 Chapters worldwide.

This monograph is a companion monograph that tells the story of signal-processing technologies over the same 50-year period.
