The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

In October 2016, inside a sold-out arena in Zurich, a man named Numa Poujouly steered his wheelchair up to the central podium. The 30-yearold, who became paralyzed after a bicycle accident in his teens, had triumphed in the tournament’s most futuristic event: a video-game-like race in which the competitors controlled their speeding avatars with just their minds.

The IEEE annual election begins on 15 August, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society is committed to ensuring that its members are prepared with sufficient information about the candidates in order to make their best informed decisions.

Your vote is important! On 15 August 2017, the election of Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 7 & 9 and Region 10 (term 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2019) and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2020) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors will open. Ballots will be mailed to SPS members.

In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I am writing to solicit nominations for the Awards Board and the Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee. This year, the Society will be filling THREE positions on the N&A Committee for the term 2018-19 and THREE positions on the Awards Board, one position for a two year term for 2018-2019 and two positions for the regular three year term for 2018-2020. Nominations must be received no later than Friday, 29 September 2017.

The Fellow Reference Committee is seeking nominations for three new members of the 2018 Fellow Reference Committee. The term of appointment is three years, non-renewable (1 January 2018-31 December 2020).

Earlier this year, IEEE Signal Processing Society President Rabab Ward attended the 2017 IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference. The annual event, held every May in San Jose, California, USA, drew over 1,500 attendees from around the world for networking events, professional development activities, technical sessions, and more. Dr. Ward recalls her experience below:

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is excited to announce the newest project from the Women in Signal Processing (WISP) Committee - the Women in Signal Processing Directory!

Overview
The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $20,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2017 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive.
