The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing
The anniversary of a number of significant signal processing algorithms from the 1960s, including the least mean square algorithm and the Kalman filter, provided an opportunity at ICASSP 2019 to reflect on the links between education and innovation. This led ultimately to the proposal of some special sessions as well a panel session that would provide some insight, via a historical perspective, consideration of the current status, and an assessment of the emerging educational future.
The world is moving faster, and signal processing is helping to lead the way, making mobile technologies faster, safer, and more functional on land and even under the sea. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), engineers have created an algorithm that allows autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to weigh the risks and potential rewards of exploring unknown deep-sea sites in real time.
One of the main items of feedback during our recent IEEE Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee (PRAC) meeting was that IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) rejected too many feature article white papers as being “out of scope.” In this editorial, I attempt to outline the key features of a good feature article.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is happy to announce that Prof. Jiebo Luo will be the new Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (T-MM). His three-year term will be from January 2020 to December 2022.
We are looking to hire a motivated post-doc to work on machine learning and data analytics in signal processing. In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I am writing to solicit nominations for the Awards Board and the Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee. This year, the Society will be filling THREE positions on the N&A Committee for the term 2020-21 and TWO positions on the Awards Board for the term 2020-2022.
IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) annual election will commence on 15 August, and your vote is more important than ever! Beginning this year, all eligible SPS Members will now vote for the next President-Elect (term 1 January 2020 through 31 December 2021), in addition to the Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 7 & 9 and 10 (term 1 January 2020 through 31 December 2021), and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2020 through 31 December 2022) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors (BoG).
Due to overwhelming interest in Member Driven Initiative funding, the IEEE Signal Processing Society has changed its process for submitting proposals through the program. This includes proposals for Forums, Regional Meetings, and Chapter Driven Initiatives.
It is my pleasure to share my views for the Signal Processing Society (SPS) Chapters’ best practices. Before I begin, I want to describe my own personal experience as a volunteer. I started my journey as a Treasurer (2013-14) and then as the Chairman (2015-16) for SPS Chapter, Gujarat Section (GS).
This webinar, “Data Breaches and Multiple Points to Stop Them,” will discuss how preventing unauthorized access to sensitive data might appear to be an unattainable goal. Our presenter will break down the data breach problem and give insights into what organizations could and should do to reduce their risks.
SPS has several programs to support its growing network of Chapters and Student Branch Chapters. Student Branch Chapters, in particular, have seen tremendous growth since 2016, an increase of 126% over the past three years, driven primarily by Student surges in Region 10.
New and improved monthly statistics reports are now available containing enriched visual analytics dashboards that can be used for monthly trending. These comprehensive dashboards improve efficiency by allowing OUs to quickly access data that is relevant to them by OU, Region, Section, Grade, Division, etc.
As a reminder for continuing chapter chairs and for incoming chapter chairs for 2019, we would like to highlight a valuable resource available to you. Launched last year was IEEE OU Analytics, a web-based business intelligence tool to deliver essential metrics on memberships or subscriptions to OUs...
New enhancements to the display of Section and Chapter data are now available in the Geographic Map within OU Analytics. Boundaries have been expanded to incorporate additional Sections/Subsections not previously included.
