In 2017, four of the Society’s Major Awards were renamed after a proposal by the Awards Board. The name changes we officially approved by all parties earlier in 2018 and will be put into effect for the 2018 awards cycle.  The new award titles are noted below.

Digital media, particularly audio, plays a prominent role in crime investigation whether it relates to someone admitting to a crime or exposing illegal dealings between multiple parties. Yet, society is quick to dismiss potential evidence from mainstream media, social media and other platforms.

Overview
The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $20,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2017 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive.

IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form related to a particular TC field. To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and selecting a particular TC. Visit the SPS Job Submission Form.

The Signal Processing Society, in partnership with TELUS, recently sponsored an inspiring video about a small startup team of Canadian signal processing and computer engineers who, in 1978, competed with NASA in a race to use radar to image never-before-seen parts of the earth. The video is currently airing on Air Canada flights as part of their in-flight entertainment package, and is part of an ongoing effort to increase public visibility of signal processing and the Society.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society welcomes proposals from prospective organizers of 2018 summer schools under the S3P (Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing) Program.  S3P seasonal schools are typically either summer schools or winter schools, and are geared towards providing graduate students, early stage researchers, and practitioners with background on selected topics in signal processing.

Stay tuned for announcements on “Digital Signaling: Interacting Social Sensors and Social Networks” presented by Prof. Vikram Krishnamurthy. In this webinar, Prof. Krishnamurthy will discuss how humans interact over a social network and make decisions based on sensor information.

For our October 2017 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of compressed sensing.
Patent no. 9,755,714 proposes methods and systems for performing compressed time domain joint channel estimation in a multi-user MIMO LTE wireless network include receiving training signals from a plurality of users, estimating a maximum delay spread for the received data according to a coherence bandwidth...

Your vote is important! On 15 August 2017, the election of Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 7 & 9 and Region 10 (term 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2019) and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2020) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors will open. Ballots will be mailed to SPS members.

The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 12 Technical Committees and 3 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that support a broad selection of signal processing-related activities defined by the scope of the Society.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society has appointed five new Editors-in-Chief who will start their terms on 1 January 2018.  The details are as follows...

Following the successful PCS Auction conducted by the US Federal Communications Commission in 1994, auctions have replaced traditional ways of allocating valuable radio spectrum, a key resource for any mobile telecommunications operator. Spectrum auctions have raised billions of dollars worldwide and have become a role model for market-based approaches in the public and private sectors.
