The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

Welcome to the Winter 2015 edition of the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee's Newsletter! This issue of the newsletter includes 5 articles and announcements from 23 contributors, including SLTC own staff reporters and editors. Thank you all for your contributions!

Researchers at Texas A&M University have developed a wearable device prototype that can translate American Sign Language into English in real-time. This technology provides a solution to communication problems between deaf and hearing people.

Now IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form at the related TC section pages.

During the last couple of months a few new Signal Processing and Machine Learning contests were initiated. Some of the ongoing ones with a strong relation to Signal Processing include a contest for whale recognition and one for building an AI system.

The fourth IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP) will be held in Greater Washington, DC, USA on December 7–9, 2016. GlobalSIP has rapidly assumed flagship status within the IEEE Signal Processing Society. It focuses on signal and information processing and up-and-coming signal processing themes. The conference aims to feature world-class speakers, tutorials, exhibits, and oral and poster sessions.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 23 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow.

For our November 2015 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of source localization. The section below covers patents granted recently for various signal source localization, including audio source localization algorithms, and novel hardware configurations for source localization such as multiple microphone arrays, tight-pitched detector arrays and wireless communication systems.

This month, we are happy to introduce Prof. Alexander Bertrand who is currently Assistant Professor at the Electrical Engineering Depatrtment (ESAT) of KU Leuven, Belgium.

The Industry Signal Processing Standing Committee (IDSP-SC) promotes emerging signal processing applications in industry and encourages stronger interaction between academic and industry signal processing researchers by organizing industry focused sessions at signal processing society conferences.

Depression and anxiety are common mental disorders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 14% of the world population suffers from at least one severe mood disorder during the course of their life. Researches from the University of Barcelona investigate the interaction with affective and physiologically aware virtual human characters for mood and physiological modulation.
