The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

On July 6 a technical study titled: Keys Under Doormats: Mandating Insecurity by Requiring Government Access to All Data and Communications has been published. The scientists behind this work are more than domain experts. Among the others: Steven M. Bellovin known for his work in the encrypted keys exchange; Josh Benaloh who invented the Benaloh cryptosystem; Matt Blaze who worked on cryptographic files systems; Whitfield Diffie universally known as one the pioneers of public key cryptography; Peter G. Neumann who worked on Provably Secure Operative Systems; Ronald L. Rivest who is “R” in RSA; Jeffrey I. Schiller known for being one of the creator of Kerberos and Bruce Schneier one the biggest expert in security and cryptography.

The general themes of the conference include speaker and
language recognition and characterization.

Signal processing applications surround us and the technologies we interact with. And while signal processing is one of the most pervasive fields of engineering, it is also one of the least understood. In an effort to increase awareness about signal processing, SPS has been working on a series of videos to explain elemental signal processing technologies and applications.

Each year, IEEE recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions or exercised leadership within IEEE-designated technical areas. The Signal Processing Society is honored to announce five of its members as recipients of the 2016 IEEE Technical Field Awards:

IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award

Want your voice to be heard? The IEEE Signal Processing Magazine is launching a new section called "Community Voices," in which SPS members and the signal processing community are encouraged to share their thoughts on career perspectives, technical trends, and other topics of interest to our community. A selection of the responses will be published in an upcoming issue of the Signal Processing Magazine.

As a special benefit to IEEE members for the month of June, IEEE-USA will offer “Would Have Liked to Know That! -- Book 1: Selling Yourself at Work” -- by Maura Schreier-Fleming. “Selling Yourself at Work” focuses on strategies for engineers to build a successful career by implementing some of the successful strategies sales professionals use. The latter are masters of communication and work effectively with others to get the results they want. Available 1 June to 15 July.

MGA would like to thank everyone for submitting their officer, meeting, and financial reports to IEEE in a timely manner. Following review of the reports, the rebates will be completed and distributed to eligible geographic units whose officer, financial, and meeting activity reporting was received complete and subsequently approved.

The IEEE Awards Board seeks new volunteers to serve on its award selection committees and Awards Board standing committees to assist with managing the recipient nomination and selection process for IEEE Medals, Technical Field Awards, and Recognitions, the highest awards IEEE presents on behalf of the IEEE Board of Directors.

IEEE Member Discounts offers an insurance solution that provides comprehensive global protection for personal effects for IEEE members in Regions 8-10. Mobile property insurance ensures that no matter where or how often IEEE members travel, they are fully protected (subject to policy terms and conditions). Coverage includes protection against loss, theft, or damage, and is good for 12 months on unlimited amounts of travel.

vTools Meetings is more than a place to file your unit meeting (L31) reports. The meeting scheduler feeds multiple sources, making it possible to publicize your meeting worldwide. RSS, iCal, and XML feeds are also available for custom data delivery.

The meeting registration module enables Sections, Chapters, and Affinity Groups to accept credit card payments from meeting attendees and have funds deposited directly into the organizational unit’s (OU) Concentration Banking account.

As a member benefit, IEEE members can take advantage of discounts up to 20% when renting a car for holiday or business. The discount is available at participating locations in many parts of the world. Terms and conditions apply.

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is pleased to announce some exciting upcoming events and opportunities:

International Leadership Conference

Informed by discussions at IEEE Sections Congress 2014, customer surveys, and ongoing feedback, the global IEEE Meetings, Conferences and Events (MCE) management staff has been working on ways to better support the full scope of your conference needs. Recently, they focused on providing data that you can use to drive decisions and communication, understanding that you value transparency into conferences and events occurring within your Section.

Daali, Amy Wafa. (The University of Texas at San Antonio), “PCA based algorithm for longitudinal brain tumor stage classification and dynamical modeling of tumor decay in response to VB-111 virotherapy”, Advisor: Jamshidi, Mo

Are you a practicing engineer who would like to attend GlobalSIP 2015? Talk to your local Chapter Chair about how you can qualify for travel support to attend the conference in Orlando, Florida, USA this December!

Kumar, Shamanth. (Arizona State University) “Social Media Analytics for Crisis Response”, Advisor: Liu, Huan.

Section officers can spread the word that IEEE offers a FREE online course especially designed for entrepreneurs and independent consultants. The course, called IEEE Risk Management for Engineers, examines the risk-management process including defining and measuring risk, exposure identification and risk analysis, risk responses, risk mitigation, and the value of contracts and professional liability insurance.
